Sometimes you just don't have the space for a big grill. Whether you live in an apartment, condo, on a boat or just don't have a big patio, it doesn't mean that you can't enjoy a good cookout. Try one of these smaller grills, gas, charcoal or electric to give you real grilling flavor and fun. Remember to check with the local rules where you live to know what kind of grill you can have. 1. Weber Genesis E-330

Weber Genesis E-330 Gas GrillWeber-Stephen Products Co.
Simply put the Weber Genesis line of grills are the best you can buy in this price range and beyond. The list price is $949USD but you can typically find it for around $800USD. What you get with the E-330 is a three burner grill (available in three colors), a 12,000 BTU side burner, and a 10,000 BTU internally mounted sear burner. Other models in this series come without the side burner or the sear burner. You decide which configuration works for you and buy only what you need.

2. Broil King Sovereign 90 Gas Grill

Broil King Sovereign 90 Gas GrillOnward Manufacturing Company

Broil-King makes grills that cook and cook hot. This unit has some very impressive features, including a full rotisserie system and the revolutionary Dual-Tube stainless steel burners. At around $800USD this full feature grill is expensive but it certainly can cook. The quality of this grill is exceptional and it will last for many years, but you have to factor in the price. This is definitely one of the best gas grills on the market.

3. Ultra Chef U405 Gas Grill

Ultra Chef U405 Gas GrillNapoleon Grills

The Ultra Chef line from Napoleon is their entry level grills. Available in a number of configurations and mountings, this version, the U405 is their basic model. This is a no frills grill that has excellent heat output and cooking characteristics. The porcelain coated cast iron cooking grates hold heat and give you great contact with food for searing and high temperature cooking. With the 3-burner design and highly adjustable heat output this grill can do all your basic grilling tasks with ease. Since this grill is made by Napoleon (in Canada) it has a lot to back it up.

4. The Holland Grill Maverick Model# BH421AG6

The Holland Grill Maverick Model# BH421AG6The Holland Grill
New for 2011 is the Holland Maverick limited edition gas grill to celebrate the company's 25 years in business. This is the least expensive of the Holland Grills, with a list price of $499USD but that price is subject to the dealers so you might not be able to find it for this price (I haven't). Like all Holland Grills, the Maverick has a single cast iron burner under a metal deflector plate that separates the fire from the cooking chamber. Critics will say that this is just a large metal oven, but fans of this grill (which there are many) will say that this is one of the most versatile gas grills on the market.

5. Huntington Patriot 590 Gas Grill

Huntington Patriot 590 Gas GrillOnward Manufacturing Company
This Huntington Gas Grill by Onward Manufacturing is an $800 monster available exclusively at Cabela's. Featuring the same great features that have made Broil-King amongst the best money can buy, this 5-burner grill is large and designed to impress, and impress it does. Loaded with a full rotisserie system and side burner, this grill has virtually everything. What limits it, is a low BTU output from the main burners when compared with the size and low powered side burner. While still an impressive grill, built to last there are some shortcuts made to accommodate the price versus size and features.

6. Napoleon Mirage Gas Grill Model# M485RB

Napoleon Mirage M485RB Gas GrillNapoleon Grills
Napoleon gas grills are amongst the best you can buy, but they tend to be expensive. The Mirage line is Napoleon's more affordable collection of gas grills, and this one, the M485RB, is the most basic and least expensive yet it still lists for nearly $900USD. That makes it more expensive than comparable Weber or Broil-King grills. This gas grill is a 3-burner unit with an infrared rotisserie burner (but the rotisserie kit is extra but a dealer might cut you a deal).

7. Weber Spirit S-320 Gas Grill Home Depot Edition

Weber Spirit S-320 Gas Grill Home Depot EditionWeber-Stephen Products Company
This Weber Spirit Gas Grill, the S-320, is configured exclusively for Home Depot. The only difference between this grill and the E-320 is that this one has porcelain coated cast iron cooking grates and a stainless steel hood insert (between the cast aluminum endcaps). The S-320 sells for $579USD making it $70 less than the list price of the E-320 (which can be had on sale for as low as $549). The stainless steel hood piece is merely decorative, but the cast iron cooking grates improve the cooking characteristics of this grill, making this version the better choice of the Spirit E-Series grills.

8. Broil King Crown 20

Broil King Crown 20Onward Manufacturing Company
If you are serious about grilling and want a grill that delivers both high, even heat and gives you a lot of control then this is a great grill for you. It might not look modern but Broil King has been making great grills for years. This model will give you plenty of space at 300 square inches or primary cooking area and a total of 500 square inches.

9. Napoleon Prestige I?P450

Napoleon Prestige I P450 StainlessNapoleon Grills
This is a basic, relatively expensive gas grill similar in many ways to the Weber Genesis. Manufactured in Canada by Napoleon this is a high quality grill that is built to last and grill with a high, even heat. What you don't get with this grill is a lot of extras (unless you want to pay for them), but you do get a grill that you can count on due to superior engineering and solid components. If you are willing to sacrifice fancy for quality then this is definitely a gas grill to look at.

10. Char-Broil Performance T-47D Model #463271312

Char-Broil Performance T-47D Model #463271312Char-Broil LLC
The Char-Broil Performance is based on the Quantum grill design that has been available at Lowes for the past several years. For the most part this is a completely normal gas grill. What Char-Broil has done is put a perforated sheet of metal directly under the cooking grate. This stops the flow of air and converts the heat of the burners into infrared heat. In reality, this grill doesn't grill differently than a standard grill. The problem is that this type of infrared requires extra care and is prone to rusting of the infrared "screen".

Gas Grills between \$250 and \$5

The top 10 gas grills between $250 and $500 on the market. If you are looking to purchase a new grill for between $250 and $500 (based on typical selling price) then these are the one you should be looking at. In this price range look for a basic grill that can cook and last around 5 years.

1. Broil-King Monarch 40

Broil King Monarch 40 Gas GrillOnward Manufacturing Company

If you are serious about grilling and want a grill that delivers both high, even heat and gives you a lot of control then this is a great grill for you. It might not look modern but Broil King has been making great grills for years. This model will give you plenty of space at 350 square inches or primary cooking area and a total of 520 square inches. The engineering of this grill is excellent, too bad the design is so bland.

2. Ducane Affinity 3100

Ducane Affinity 3100 Black Gas GrillWeber-Stephen Products Co.

This is a basic 3-burner gas grill for around $350. While there are many similar grills, or even grills with more extras this is the cheapest grill you can get made by Weber. This means a good design, with great support, and pretty good longevity for a moderate price. If quality is a serious issue with you, but you can't afford to spend more then this is a grill you should take a serious look at (if you can find one). Yes, there have been some cutbacks in materials to deliver this grill for the price, but the internal components are still good quality and designed to last longer than other, fancier grills.

3. Huntington Grills Classic Model# 666664

Huntington Grills Classic Model# 666664Onward Manufacturing Company
Sitting next to this grill on the showroom floor of your local Lowes is a comparably sized and featured gas grill for about half the price. The question is, which one is the better value. At just over $250 is grill is, well, to be honest, something of a steal. Yes, the grill standing next to appears to be pretty similar and at half the price I know that a lot of people are going to skip this one and buy that one. That is a shame. This grill will last at least twice as long and will do a much better job of grilling with more even heating and greater temperature control.

4. Ultra Chef U405

5. The Holland Grill Maverick Model# BH421AG6

The Holland Grill Maverick Model# BH421AG6The Holland Grill

For the first time in many years you can buy a Holland grill for a price of $500USD. The Maverick is a limited edition version of the popular Holland Grill at a special, low price. Like all Holland Grills, the Maverick has a single cast iron burner under a metal deflector plate that separates the fire from the cooking chamber. Critics will say that this is just a large metal oven, but fans of this grill (which there are many) will say that this is one of the most versatile gas grills on the market.

6. Minden Master Gas Grill

Minden Master Gas Grillmindengrill.com

This compact three burner gas grill was designed to ship directly to consumers limiting the size and weight of the unit to something most shipping companies would transport. Even with these limits this 3-burner gas grill produces high, even heat and works very well as a basic grill for around $400. With additional features (purchasable anytime) you can give this grill a side burner, stainless steel cooking grates, a full sized griddle and much more.

7. Weber Spirit E-210 Black

Weber Spirit E-210 BlackWeber-Stephen Products Company

If you want a smaller, dependable grill then this is a good one. If you need more cooking space then you probably need a different grill. With two burners you don't get a lot of versatility when it comes to indirect grilling and the 350 square inches of primary grilling space make it one of the smaller full sized grills. Since this grill also has no extras you will get a grill and nothing more, though a rotisserie kit is available. While limited in size and function this grill is perfect for a small space and the person who really just needs to be able to grill up some chops or chicken pieces.

8. Broil-Mate Reddi-Bilt 15516

Broil-Mate 15516 Gas GrillOnward Manufacturing Company

If you are serious about grilling and want a grill that delivers both high and even heat and gives you a lot of control, but don't want to spend a lot of money then this is a great grill for you. It might not look modern but Broil-Mate has been making great grills for years. This model will give you plenty of space at 400 square inches or primary cooking area and a total of 700 square inches. And plenty of power with its 50,000 BTU main burner output.

9. Stok 4-Burner Quattro Gas Grill Model# SGP4330SB

Stok 4-Burner Gas Grill Model# SGP4330SBStok Grills
Recently a major grill maker told me that the future was in accessories. The Stok Quattro may just be the perfect design for this. With removable cooking grate sections you can convert to use a griddle, vegetable basket or pizza stone without turning off the grill or even stopping cooking. The unique design of this grill gives you a tremendous amount of versatility in a complete unit. The best part is that all these extras come standard so the $400USD price tag gets you everything. Hopefully Home Depot, the exclusive dealer, will have replacement parts and maybe even more toys to play with.

10. Char-Griller Grillin Pro Model# 3001

Char-Griller Grillin Pro Gas Grill Model #3001Char-Griller

Char-Griller has been making low priced charcoal grills and smokers for a few years and has recently started making gas grills. This gas grill is built on the modified body of the smallest of their charcoal grills, basically replacing the coal grate with three burners. In addition they have put on a 12,000 BTU side burner. This means a heavy thermal painted steel grill body and porcelain coated cast iron cooking grates on a gas grill. Surprising this actually works quite well for a low priced (typically under $200) gas grill.

Maxfire 2-Burner Gas Grill Model #810-9212-SB

Maxfire 2-Burner Gas Grill Model #810-9212-SBBrinkmann Corporation
This is about as basic a gas grill as you are going to get. For about $100 you get two burners in a metal box. That's it. Of course the advantage is that this grill has few parts to fail. Of course this grill lacks quality as much as it does feature. The burners are lightweight, poor grade metal and will probably only last a year or two. On the other hand, for the price you can get a grill for the season that will do a decent job of grilling burgers and hot dogs. Don't expect it to cook well. The heat is low and uneven, but you can't beat the price.

Brinkmann 2-Burner Portico Collection Model# 810-3260-S

Brinkmann 2-Burner Portico Collection Gas Grill Model# 810-3260-SBrinkmann Corporation
The Brinkmann Portico collection are the latest entrants into the "patio" grill category. These smaller, but full height grills are perfect for the person who doesn't need to grill for more than a couple of people and who don't have the space for a large grill. This is a low cost and lower quality version of this grill. This 2-burner, no frills, gas grill sells exclusively at Home Depot for $140USD.

Brinkmann Professional 3-Burner Model# 810-3330-S

Brinkmann Professional 3-Burner Model# 810-3330-SBrinkmann Corporation
This gas grill is where Brinkmann starts getting closer to a good grill. Without all the extras and stainless steel, this is a basic grill that is close to being worth the price. Typically of these style of grills, the internal components are thin and lightweight, meaning that they won't last very long, but it just might be long enough for you to get your moneys worth.

Brinkman 4-Burner Gas Grill Model# 810-2410-S

Brinkman 4-Burner Gas Grill Model# 810-2410-SBrinkmann Corporation
This basic unit offers you a full feature gas grill at a discount price (around $200USD). The four burner design gives you lots of versatility in your cooking. With the addition of a side burner you can do virtually anything but rotisserie. This grill is, however, limited in durability thanks to its reliance on low quality materials and lightweight construction. All stainless steel parts, including the tubular burners at 400 series stainless. The knobs and handles are plastic. The "features", like the bottle opener and flip up front panel are more gimmick than gadget. There are certainly better grills out there.

Char-Broil 4-Burner Gas Grill Model# 463211511

Char-Broil 4-Burner Gas Grill Model# 463211511Char-Broil LLC.
This is a typical $200 Char-Broil gas grill. Offering 4 main burners and a simple side burner, you get a basic function grill for a low price, but don't plan on it lasting very long. The lightweight cooking grates, burners and burner covers won't take a lot of punishment and will start to corrode early. If you are only interested in a grill with limited cooking performance and don't plan to keep it long then this isn't a bad investment, I just wouldn't want you thinking that this is the last grill you will ever own.

Char-Broil Commercial TRU-Infrared Urban Grill Model# 463243812

Char-Broil Commercial TRU-Infrared 2-Burner Gas Grill Model# 463243812Char-Broil LLC
The Char-Broil TRU-Infrared represents an innovative approach to an inexpensive all infrared gas grill. This unit uses a simple sheet of perforated stainless steel to convert the output of a standard gas burner into infrared energy. This small, patio sized unit has two burners that put out only 21,000 BTUs under 333 square inches of cooking space but can still reach temperatures around 700 degrees F. Unfortunately this grill is constructed from low quality and thin stainless steel limiting its durability. Each burner has an individual temperature gauge.

Brinkmann Dual Zone Charcoal Gas Grill Model# 810-3821-S

Brinkmann Dual Zone Charcoal Gas Grill Model # 810-3820-SThe Brinkmann Corporation
Over the years several companies have attempted to blend the convenience of gas with the flavor of charcoal. Recently there have been a few side by side grills. Basically this version is two grills, one gas and one charcoal mounted together on a single cart. Add in a side burner, albeit a weak one and you have what would appear to be a complete package, and all for about $300USD. Sound too good to be true? Well it should. The real question is, do you really need this 5 foot long, 120 pound all in one grill or would you be better served with separate grills. The truth is that this grill isn't that well built.

Brinkmann Elite Stainless Steel 4-Burner Model# 810-3660-S

Brinkmann Elite Stainless Steel 4-Burner Model# 810-3660-SBrinkmann Corporation
Being able to list features has become a the major method for mass market retailers to sell grills. This grill's big feature is its sear burner. To put this sear burner in, Brinkmann took out two 10,000 BTU, standard burners and replaced them with a single, U-shaped dual control 20,000 BTU burner. Over the top of it, they put a different style porcelain coated cast iron cooking grate to give the illusion a separate space. This is an illusion and nothing more. Other than this, the Elite is a big grill, 5 feet across with 650 square inches of cooking space. This is more space than most of us will ever need.

Char-Broil RED 3-Burner Infrared Gas Grill Model# 463250511

Char-Broil RED 3-Burner Infrared Gas Grill Model# 463250511Char-Broil LLC.
For 2011, Char-Broil has made some design changes to its RED line of infrared grills, largely to address the long preheat times that this grill suffered from. The boosted output of the main burners will heat the grill faster. However, this still leaves the problem of the central component, the infrared U-emitter, not being able to take the heat. While this grill can produce some impressive heat and grill up some great steaks, issues with design and the quality of components limit its lifespan. I just want you to be prepared for that.

Brinkmann Commander 5-Burner Model #810-8502-S

Brinkmann Commander 5-Burner Model# 810-8502-SBrinkmann Corporation
This is a big gas grill. With the exception of the infrared searing side burner it is also a rather basic grill. The infrared sear burner is so you can quickly sear meats before putting them on this big grill. The irony is that while the grill could hold around 20 steaks, the sear burner can only hold one, so if you wanted to grill up a large number of steaks with a great sear on them, you would have to do it one at a time. So the bottom line is that this a really big grill with two side burners (one is a standard burner) for around $400USD.
