This is a heavy grill with heavy cast iron and stainless steel body parts. The 37,500 BTU output from three stainless steel burners is enough to heat the nearly 450 square inches of primary grilling area. Recently redesigned to improve quality, the Vermont Castings VCS300 is a good, but basic grill. The materials used are excellent and the construction is definitely superior to the mass market, store brand grills in this price range. Look to spend around $1000USD for this basic grill (more if you want a side burner). What you don't get in features you do get in durability and cooking abilities.
Vermont Castings has had a troubled decade. After years of financial troubles the parent company, Canadian based CFM went bankrupt and was bought in 2008 by MHSC, a U.S. based company. MHSC is a bigger and more stable company with a good reputation for products and support. In 2010 MHSC reintroduced the Vermont Castings Gas Grill line. These grills were popular and well built but as CFM went under manufacturing was switched to China and quality suffered. MHSC picked up where CFM left off and to look at these grills you would think that nothing had changed. The truth is that MHSC re-engineered the grills from the inside out. From the materials to the manufacturing to the packaging to the assembly to the support the new Vermont Castings gas grills are better in every way.
Notoriously difficult to assemble (largely a problem for the people who sold them), MHSC changed how these grills are built, reducing assembly steps and simplifying design issues. They also changed the packaging so that the grills are not damaged in shipping. Gone is the 430 stainless steel body parts that pitted and rusted and in comes 304 stainless steel with a new finishing process to make sure these grills retain their appearance and last considerably longer than the 2008 models CFM sold. The list of changes includes 22 major changes to these grills and even the smallest and most insignificant detail was addressed.
While still made in China, MHSC has placed their own staff on the assembly line to ensure quality control and given specific instructions that any flawed part is thrown out. MHSC has made a major investment in the Vermont Castings Gas Grills to restore them to their previous glory and make them a grill that can stand shoulder to shoulder with brands like Weber, Napoleon, and Broil-King.
This Vermont Castings Gas Grill is the smallest and most basic of the grill line. You get a 3-burner gas grill and if you want a side burner (available as a standard burner or infrared searing burner) you are going to have to spend extra. While this makes the grill a little more customizable than most, it means extra expense for the features. Of course if you don't want or need a side burner it will save you money.
The construction of this gas grill is heavy (and I mean heavy) porcelain coated cast iron and 304 stainless steel. The construction is good quality and the materials are very good considering the price range (look to spend around $1000USD for this gas grill). Look for this grill to last many years and provide very good grilling. If you are looking for a basic grill and want something more durable that the mass market products out there, this is one grill to consider.
